Probably because they were cow fairies. They only linger long enough to leave gifts behind. From their behinds :-) Fortunately, they do not take after the tooth fairy, who leaves gifts under pillows. Although heavier than a standard fairy, they are quite stealthy. They also have a sense of humor. Legend has it that they once infiltrated a famous London bakery and, quicker than you can say "Elementary, my Dear Watson", had filled the ovens with... cow pies. The moral of this story is... look before you step and sniff before you bite!
